The Armoured Command Vehicle (ACV), nicknamed Rommel's 'Mammoths', owing to their large size, became popular with the German commander, Erwin Rommel, in April 1941 when he took possession of three captured British ACVs, one of which he named Max.
Built onto truck chassis, these command 'offices-on-wheels' typically resembled armoured buses. Developed by the British, examples captured by the Germans in the North African Campaign (1940-1943) were readily adopted and re-used.
